This is a wedding cake with a difference
It is an interesting design and I am very pleased with the way it turned out.
To create this design I baked 3 red velvet cakes, sizes12, 10 and 8 inch round cakes. The cakes were filled with a creamy vanilla buttercream and then covered with white fondant icing. I searched the internet for suitable skull pictures and spent several hours carefully cutting them out.
The next problem was how to attach these to the cake so that they could be easily removed without damaging the icing. In the end I used double sided tape to stick the skulls on to the cake in different orientations. The next stage was to airbrush the cake with edible black food colouring, this takes time to get a perfect finish and I removed the stencils from the cake and left it to dry. In the meantime I spent the next 2 hours cleaning my kitchen, the airbrush doesn't just cover the cake, all my work surfaces were black.
Once the colour had dried I hand painted grey shading on the skulls to give them a more 3D effect and then decorated the cake with white sugar beads and red sugar flowers.
The cake was quite stunning.
